Deep thoughts from Intern David… I think the youngest Intern we’ve ever hired.
Intern David’s Top Ten - Wed April 9, 2008
Over the last two and a half months it has been a privilege to work and learn along side some of the most fun-loving yet professional people I have ever met. My internship with the “Sarah and No Name Morning Show” on RadioAlice has been full of it’s fair share of triumphs and blunders. Nevertheless, I will always be grateful for the opportunities and experiences I was given during my short (but very eventful) time, and I take with me many memories and lessons that are sure to be useful as I continue my pursuit towards my ultimate dream, a career in film writing and production.
So with that brief introduction, and without further adieu, I present to you my top ten moments and lessons I have collected during my reign as an intern:
- Dedication
- Having a job in general has been a new and exciting experience, however the commitment and dedication necessary to perform was unlike anything I had ever faced before. Required to be in the studio well before the sun comes up, I found myself juggling a harsh schedule as a full-time student at the
University of
California,
Santa Cruz with an 80 mile, hour and a half commute, and a call time of 4:30 in the morning. It has been insane! But at the same time has been valuable. This is the type of industry where you have to push yourself towards your goals, so along with gaining experience, this internship has proven to me how capable and focused I really am.
- Life as a Commuter
- Among all the other things I have learned, I have gained a profound respect to all of those who deal with a daily commute to work. I always thought driving was fun. That was of course until I had to deal with long commutes back and forth between Santa Cruz and
San Francisco while often finding myself in a race against the clock to get to class on time.
- Gotta have love for the meter maids
- I think my fellow interns would agree with me when I say that the meter maids SUCK!!! Most of us have already gotten our ass kicked by at least two or three tickets, and as a college student working an internship that is non-pay it becomes killer.
- I will always remember my first ticket. Like a good little intern I remembered to make my way downstairs just before 9 to fill my meter for the next hour. I felt so proud of myself, partly because I avoided another ticket, and secondly because I avoided an “ass beating” from my Dad. However, that was all to be remiss for, when I arrived downstairs an hour later, low and behold a white envelope was gently pressed against my window. I forgot to turn my wheels! Of all the things in the world to get a ticket for, I forgot to turn my wheels! Jesus! They just try to get you for anything these days.
- Living the Dream
- One of the most inspirational things I have been able to see day in and day out is Sarah and No name literally living the dream. Each morning, these two get out of bed, drive over to the studio, and simply chit chat for a couple of hours before calling it a day. Who wouldn’t want a job like that? But what makes it work is that I know that at some point they too had to climb the hill just like me. They too had to start from the bottom and work their way up, and it’s encouraging to see that it is possible. It is possible to live the dream, dreams can come true, with a little work and dedication anything is possible. You just have to be patient.
- Radio Appreciation
- I have always been a more visual person; therefore working in radio was almost like going back to the Stone Age. However, if anything, I have learned to embrace this forgotten medium and really respect how it is produced. Radio is the progenitor of television, people forget that, but nevertheless, it’s just amazing to see how it affects the everyday lives of its listeners. People fall in love with the voices of Sarah, No Name, Hooman, Hyphy, and Matty without ever seeing their faces. Also, radio is more teamwork, from the producer down to us interns, more than anything. It’s been great, and often invigorating as an intern to have a job where you can literally see the everyday difference you make. We are all cogs that help turn the wheel.
- Cleaning the dishes
- It doesn’t happen often, but sometimes, you do get stuck with the “bitch work.” Face it, when it comes down to it, we’re still interns, right? So as it turns out, on my last day, I had to deal with the grease and grime left over from a prime rib breakfast feast (that we interns, I regret to inform you, didn’t get to partake in) from two days before. You have to scrap to get into this industry, as well as clean off the scraps apparently.
- The Lista Story
- My senior year in high school I dealt with a teacher who, for lack of a better word was an asshole, and as of recently, a pedophile and meth addict. Who would have guessed, right? Well to make a long story short, I had some beef with this teacher David Lista (nothing major, I made some sweatshirts, he tried to sabotage my college recommendations and referred to me as a “pig” to other students, you know, the usual), so naturally when this story broke I thought, “this is perfect for Half Ass News.” Rather quickly I found myself in the studio with Sarah and No Name and then out in the field collecting interviews from students of my old high school. After more than 340 miles of commuting and 20 hours on one busy Wednesday, I got to enjoy my own little slice of revenge.
- Being Interviewed
- Just being in the studio with Sarah and No Name and talking to them has to have been one of the coolest experiences of my life, since, other than the Word of the Day, and a few special tasks here and there; an intern’s actual airtime is rather short. However, being interviewed for my opinion and story by KCBS is a whole different experience all together. I had this overwhelming feeling afterwards of being “legit.”
- One negative thing about being on the air is hearing the sound of your own voice. I don’t know about you, but I think I sound like a douche, which rather upsets me. Why hadn’t anybody ever told me!?!?!?!
- My Name is
Davis… I mean David
- Sometimes you just get so caught up with getting your word of the day sentence just right that you forget your name. I SLIPPED UP ALL RIGHT! It happens; I was so worried about my whole post-St. Patrick’s day sentence and making sure I had enough time to say it that I flubbed up. The worst part is ever since Hooman has been giving me nothing but crap for it. He just loves to walk pass me, give me his little rapist smile and go “how you doing
Davis?”
- The Word of the Day
- Some interns despise the word of the day, some steer clear of it, and some embrace it. I tried to make every word of the day special. Yes, I’ve had my fair share of stumbles and fumbles, getting up to the mic the first few times is intimidating, but it’s always been in good fun. I can say that I have thoroughly enjoyed singing, giving the old RAZZLE-dazzle, to ROCKin out, my word of the days. You just have to make the best of it, it’s your small piece of daily fame, and remember, all of these prizes and more await you at Radio Alice.com.

I am realizing that the best time for me to Blog usually ends up being when I find myself still at the station at a very late, God awful hour. (Especially for someone like me who got here at 5:30am) It is strangely theraputic to whine and ramble about a bunch of nonsense on an equally strange platform.
If you’re a fan of the Blogging, you’re in for a treat. Since the show has been a little action packed these days, I gave our Interns the assignment of writing about at least one event that they participated in over the last couple weeks. So this will be the first in a series of about about 6 or so entries… I’ll round it out and throw another blurb in myself after I put all the kid’s stuff up… I just realized, maybe I should have tried posting everything in reverse order so that this will be at the end of the Blog roll… kind of like April Fools. Eh, whatever.
Alright, here we go… Enjoy… -Boot

Since it’s already 6:20pm and I’m still at the staion, I’m afraid to jump in my car right now because I’m guessing afternoon traffic is just a tad bit heavier today than it normally is.
I just noticed that we’ve all gotten a little lazy on the blogging scene, and none of us have put a single post up this month. I will take the opportunity to throw a few thoughts out there while I wait for the traffic to go away.
I know it’s a two day old story, but I still can’t get over trying to figure out who put the mayonaise on our studio window. Everyone thinks the Morning Show has completely lost their minds because we’ve all gone a little agro and are hyperfocused on finding out who did this. But many didn’t see (or smell) what we came to work to that morning. For those of you who didn’t listen on Tuesday morning, we came in that morning to find a disgusting goo splattered on the window of our call screener studio. (Which just so happens to be the room that I spend a lot of time in with Hooman) We deducted that it was a big glob of mayonaise (No Name smelled it), and Sarah insisted we not clean the mess up until we found out who did it, so they can clean it up themselves. Well, it got more and more disgusting as the day went on, so of course it became a big distraction and we spent a ton of time bitching about it on the air. Big surprise, no one will own up to it. Our overnight Board Op Mina said she never noticed it until we turned the light on in that studio at 5am. Marcus D our new afternoon guy said he was in that studio working until 11pm and it wasn’t there when he left. And Dayna our night jock said she didn’t notice anything when she got off air at midnight. I can’t quite figure out how to post pictures on here yet, but once I do, I will put it up and let you decide if we went nutso over nothing. Guess it doesn’t matter, it looks like it will forever remain a mystery.
The reason I’m here later than usual today is because Hooman, Matty, The Interns, and myself walked down to the Embarcadero to cover the Torch Run China Protest. It got pretty crazy over there, but in a strange way a kind of neat thing to be a part of and witness. We indeed were bamboozled, and never got to see the torch. But we did stand proud with our “Go USA” and “Don’t Touch the Torch” banners. (Thanks Ben Perry!) Hooman and Hyphy were on the prowl with their mics and recorders, and I think I was able to capture some good pictures and video. I’m sure you will see those on radioalice.com in the coming days when we start recapping and playing the audio back.
Alright, I think I’m done for now… plus my boss Mike is yelling at me for hanging around here as long as he does. I’ll check in again sooner than later.

So i was reading all the awesome blogs on here (which means scrolling through looking for my name) and I came across no names blog about the bar trail mix. I had to figure out how to create one on my own but there was no 7-11 near my favorite bar (tres gringos in SJ) to attempt this masterful feast. Then, yesterday, during the Warriors unfortunate loss to the lakers, me and my friends invented the Party Tray 2008. On this party tray was lunch meat, crackers, buffalo wings, fried chicken, french fries, red vines, twizzlers, and one burrito. My point being more varieties of foods should be brought together to form a delightful harmony of flavors for ones pallet. Feel free to invent your own trail mix or party tray and spread the joy of bring your favorite foods together….Mission: a sushi roll with steak, and sausage in it…
I promise i’ll get better at this

I know I’m a week late, but here are my top 10 favorite moments from the craziness that was St. Patty’s Day (top moments I can remember, anyways)
In no particular order…
1- Seeing No Name’s wife Christi Name at the broadcast…Christi is one of my favorite people that I never get to see enough of. Last time, she was feeding me muffins and Pedialyte after my 30th Birthday Bar Night in Rhonert Park. It was nice for both us to actually catch up a little a knock a few back together.
2 - Seeing the listeners that show up to these things, and the love the show gets… You all never seem to amaze me. Every year, at every event, the Morning Show Faithful show up in full force and we’re almost speechless at how much support the show gets. Personally, it always makes me realize how lucky I am to have this gig.
3 - Hyphy Mike at his first Broadcast… The boy just keeps making me proud. He’s such a talent and so witty, and I get joy watching him take this all in and have fun with it. (Like a younger Hooman, but without the annoying ego) The Interns have always been “my kids”, like my brothers and sisters. There’s always a special kinship there because I know what it’s like to experience playing in this candy store for the first time. So whenever I see them do well and make a name for themself, I just smile.
4- Introducing the Wonderbread 5 with Matty. How we both made it to 5pm at Front Street still standing, is beyond me. Don’t know what Pat (WB5 Guitar Superman) was thinking when he asked Matt and I to go on stage for them… St. Patty’s with the WB5 & The Royal Exchange has become a fun tradition the last few years, always a blast.
5 - Dat Phan’s amazement of our drinking… It’s funny, this is his second live broadcast with the show. He was at the Discovery Kingdom Broadcast last year, then the Irish Bank this year…Talk about two extremes.
6 - Stephanie the Irish Bank Hero/Trooper… Much love always to Stephanie, one of the owners of the Irish Bank. She stays sober all day long to make sure the Bank is the best place to be on St. Patty’s Day, and all year round for that matter. Talk about someone who’s witnessed a few good stories…If you’re ever at The Bank having a drink or two, don’t forget to tell Stephanie, Ronin, and the whole crew how much they rule.
7 - Trying to make our way to the Budha Bar (longest walk down Grant street ever). Walking down Grant Street with about 15 people, which included No Name, Sticker Dan, & a skateboard. Nuff said.
8- The march around the block of The Bank before going back inside to eat… If you saw a group of folks exit The Irish Bank Alley on Grant Street, then stand around for 10 minutes trying to think of a place to grab a bite to eat. Then they walked around the corner and right back into the Bank at the other end of the Bank’s alley on Bush Street, then sat down and ordered Corn Beef and Cabbage. That was us.
9- Aftermath of Waking up the next morning and seeing the drunk text convos I had on my phone. It’s just funny to see how drunk people interpret simple messages.
10 - Corn Beef & Cabbage dinner with friends at the end of the day. Best way to top off a great St. Patty’s Day. I met up with two of my favorite folks, Amy & Azzi, at the Wonderbread 5 Show. Afterwards, we went to Amy’s place and another one of my most favorite peeps, Ashley had made us all a great Corn Beef & Cabbage Dinner. Not to mention they took great care of me and gave me a place to land that night. Woudn’t have wanted to end it with another group of friends.
And that pretty much summed up my St. Patty’s for 2008.
If you missed any of it, you can find pictures, video, and a podcast of the whole live broadcast in the Sarah & No Name section of Radioalice.com.
This seems like only the beginning. A ton is coming up in the next couple months… First up, the 3 Minute Film Fest on April 11th.
Hope to see you there… -Boot

Our first blog, post St. Patty’s Day mayhem: Intern Vaughn’s version of the broadcast from yesterday.
Once I sober up, I’m sure I’ll have a few thoughts on the day myself… Enjoy! -Boot
St Patrick’s Day by Intern Vaughn
So, although I am morally opposed to the significant innuendos of nerd associated with blogging, I suppose there is no better day to start than today, St Patrick’s Day, to tell a bit about my life as an intern with Radio Alice’s morning show! Simply put, today’s show at the Irish Blank was crazy!
Who knew the Bay Area had so many people who would be willing to show up at 6 AM to drink and watch people talk about other people drinking? The build up for today’s event was big.
Hooman said there would be at least 500 people (not true!), Charlene continually repeated that our work as interns today would be nothing short of chaos (partially true). Therefore, I was a bit surprised to find that I along with the other interns did pretty much nothing but stand around for the first hour and a half of the show. Call it the calm before the storm, but I was adequately duped into thinking that our job as interns on St Patrick’s Day was easy. All it took was a few drinks in the crowd and the on air people (none for the interns until 10 AM, the end of our work day) for things to become intense. Within a couple of hours I worked as security, on air talent, janitor, cab watcher/payer, human microphone stand, bartender, photographer, contestant finder, and sword watcher. Soon I found myself surprisingly exhausted somewhere between trying to convince drunk Irish men that I was not trying to pick up on their women by asking them to participate in on air games and watching Dat Phan beg No Name to not wield a broad sword while standing on his chair and providing a toast after drinking roughly three gallons of Stella Artois (try being a sober intern for this morning show, not easy!). Still, as 10 AM rolled around and I began to mingle with the good people who showed up on a Monday to celebrate, I couldn’t help but think that the luck of the Irish had turned for this 1/5th son of Ireland (ok maybe more like 1/8th).
Keep on commenting on the blogs to keep everyone going, encouragement is key! And while you are at it, support your local music and check out the Santa Cruz based Devil Makes Three and their song, Black Irish, in honor of
Ireland’s most famous immigrant! Cheers.
