Intern Serena on her Interviews for Forbidden Kingdom

Friday, April 18th, 2008

We haven’t mentioned it much on the air, but I gave Intern Serena and Intern Erik their first big Interview break, when they got to interview the Director and a couple of actors in the new Jackie Chan and Jet Li flick, “Forbidden Kingdom”. Here’s Serena’s take on the day…

Thursday April 17, 2008

Well, here’s another braindead commentary from me, intern Serena.  Last Thursday intern Erik and I headed out to interview Collin Chou and Crystal Liu from the new Jackie Chan and Jet Li film The Forbidden Kingdom, which by the way is being released in theaters this Friday April 18th!  I definitely would recommend this film to all you Alice movie goers!  But back to the interviews.  Erik and I got the clear go ahead for these interviews about 10am that very morning.  I had originally thought that my interview questions were going to be given to me, so I was lazy and didn’t write any questions prior to that very morning.  After I got the call that I would be doing the interview, I hopped my lazy ass into the shower.  As I showered I thought up a few sly interview questions, then I jammed over to the hotel downtown.  As I walked up one of the steepest San Francisco hills you could imagine (in my 3 inch heels of course) I began to get all flustered and sweaty thinking I wasn’t going to make the interview.  Erik had done the first interview earlier that day, and we were supposed to do the second together.  As soon as I got into the room Erik let me in on the fact that our interviews were not going to be done on our audio only equipment as we had planned, but we were going to do filmed interviews.  Okay, now I almost crapped my pants!  I was hot, sweaty, and I had basically no make up on, and now I was going to interview two famous Chinese actors on video!  Not to mention that this was my first interview ever in my life!  Not long after I walked in, the girl came up to Erik and I and said that they were ready for us, but only one of us could do the interview!  Well, luckily a guy wanted to go before me, so that bought me a little time.  Erik and I decided that my Boxers or Briefs question was a great one, so that was definitely in.  Erik was even nice enough to give me one of his own questions.  Of course it turned out to be a dud with the two actors!  So did my boxers and briefs question.  They had no clue what boxers or briefs meant, so I had to explain it only for Collin Chou to tell me that I would have to go to his room if I wanted to find out!  OMG!  Anywho, my legs were shaking throughout the entire interview.  At first I didn’t know which camera or direction to look in.  I felt so awkward!  Well, to sum it all up, I lived through it!  I couldn’t believe it.  After that I walked back down that crazy hill and I decided to take those damned 3 inch heels off and walk barefooted.  Just another happy crazy day at Alice!  :)

Intern Jenna on the Torch Protests & 3 Minute Film Fest

Friday, April 18th, 2008

Intern Jenna’s take on our trek out the Embarcadero during the Torch Run Protests, and also the fantastic night that was The 3 Minute Film Festival…

Thursday April 17, 2008

Ahhh the life of a morning show intern, finally an outlet for us to blog our true feelings! So…where do I begin? Hmmm well actually no complaints, despite the whole sleep deprivation dilemma, working for the show has been a blast! Last week defiantly marked my favorite week here by far!! I’ll start with the Torch protests in San Francisco. The KGBeast Lesya and I came into the studio Wednesday morning and as far as I had known it was going to be the two of us and Hooman going out to interview the crazies down at the embarcadero. Matty had some signs with “Go USA!” and “Don’t Touch the Torch”, printed on them. Needless to say we stood out down at the protest. Had the torch ACTUALLY CAME DOWN the embarcadero we would have served as great supporters for the it, which it totally needed!

Anyway moving on to the 3 min film fest…that was a crazy night for sure!! My favorite quote of the night probably was Matty when he introduced “Return to the Studio”… (not verbatim but his intro went something like this), ” Hello Ssssan Fran Sssan Francisco… oh you guys know I’m drunk”…then Matty proceeds to eat the Mic! My heart swelled with pride. On to the films…Fantaisie in Bubblewrap, Directed by Arthur Metcalf was a favorite of mine… I mean honestly anyone who has the creative imagination to give life and humor to bubble wrap deserves some kind of award! I will forever think twice before I absent mindedly pop bubble wrap thanks to you Metcalf! The night ended great with everyone heading over to La Roccas. We had a recorder with us, and you will have some amazing bumpers dedicated to the one and only “DAS BOOT” … Char just needs  ignore the random yelling and me and Lesya having a 5 min. conversation about pancakes, waffles and snoring at the end of it. All in all it was such a fun week at the show and its only going to get better!

Peace in the Middle East!!

Intern Vaughn on Hooman v. Hyphy

Friday, April 18th, 2008

Mr. Personality, Intern Vaughn on the great day that was Hooman vs. Hyphy.

Wed April 16th, 2008

Before I say anything about Hooman versus Hyphy today I’ve got to say, this morning’s show was the most amusing show that I have heard in my semester as an intern because the listener participation today was awesome!  In one day we heard listeners trying to piggy back on No Name’s bday, offering No Name the chance to participate in the boat races in Lake County AND offering a fire suit to wear, texting/calling/participating by the thousands in the online poll to determine the winner of Hyphy vs Hooman, and calling in to cheer up/bitterly ridicule a very downtrodden Hooman.  The end result was hilarity and jocularity on all parts so I encourage everyone to keep up their participation with the show (or comments on blogs for that matter) because it definitely does make the show genuinely funny…not that it isn’t funny when there isn’t participation……

Now that I have credited this morning’s listeners I must say, today’s voting was a complete injustice.  Hyphy Mike’s interview was funny, but the fact is, based on interview skills alone, Hooman blew Hyphy out of the water!!  I learned today that the people of the Bay Area are ruthless and are out for blood, Hooman’s blood.  Then to top it all off, you people add insult to injury by mocking the poor guy for his complete inability to successfully date a cougar.  You people are sick!!!

Intern David’s Top 10 Notes.

Deep thoughts from Intern David… I think the youngest Intern we’ve ever hired.

Intern David’s Top Ten - Wed April 9, 2008

Over the last two and a half months it has been a privilege to work and learn along side some of the most fun-loving yet professional people I have ever met. My internship with the “Sarah and No Name Morning Show” on RadioAlice has been full of it’s fair share of triumphs and blunders. Nevertheless, I will always be grateful for the opportunities and experiences I was given during my short (but very eventful) time, and I take with me many memories and lessons that are sure to be useful as I continue my pursuit towards my ultimate dream, a career in film writing and production.

So with that brief introduction, and without further adieu, I present to you my top ten moments and lessons I have collected during my reign as an intern:

  1. Dedication
    • Having a job in general has been a new and exciting experience, however the commitment and dedication necessary to perform was unlike anything I had ever faced before. Required to be in the studio well before the sun comes up, I found myself juggling a harsh schedule as a full-time student at the
      University of
      California,
Santa Cruz with an 80 mile, hour and a half commute, and a call time of 4:30 in the morning. It has been insane! But at the same time has been valuable. This is the type of industry where you have to push yourself towards your goals, so along with gaining experience, this internship has proven to me how capable and focused I really am.
  2. Life as a Commuter
    • Among all the other things I have learned, I have gained a profound respect to all of those who deal with a daily commute to work. I always thought driving was fun. That was of course until I had to deal with long commutes back and forth between Santa Cruz and
San Francisco while often finding myself in a race against the clock to get to class on time.
  3. Gotta have love for the meter maids
    • I think my fellow interns would agree with me when I say that the meter maids SUCK!!! Most of us have already gotten our ass kicked by at least two or three tickets, and as a college student working an internship that is non-pay it becomes killer.
    • I will always remember my first ticket. Like a good little intern I remembered to make my way downstairs just before 9 to fill my meter for the next hour. I felt so proud of myself, partly because I avoided another ticket, and secondly because I avoided an “ass beating” from my Dad. However, that was all to be remiss for, when I arrived downstairs an hour later, low and behold a white envelope was gently pressed against my window. I forgot to turn my wheels! Of all the things in the world to get a ticket for, I forgot to turn my wheels! Jesus! They just try to get you for anything these days.
  4. Living the Dream
    • One of the most inspirational things I have been able to see day in and day out is Sarah and No name literally living the dream. Each morning, these two get out of bed, drive over to the studio, and simply chit chat for a couple of hours before calling it a day. Who wouldn’t want a job like that? But what makes it work is that I know that at some point they too had to climb the hill just like me. They too had to start from the bottom and work their way up, and it’s encouraging to see that it is possible. It is possible to live the dream, dreams can come true, with a little work and dedication anything is possible. You just have to be patient.
  5. Radio Appreciation
    • I have always been a more visual person; therefore working in radio was almost like going back to the Stone Age. However, if anything, I have learned to embrace this forgotten medium and really respect how it is produced. Radio is the progenitor of television, people forget that, but nevertheless, it’s just amazing to see how it affects the everyday lives of its listeners. People fall in love with the voices of Sarah, No Name, Hooman, Hyphy, and Matty without ever seeing their faces. Also, radio is more teamwork, from the producer down to us interns, more than anything. It’s been great, and often invigorating as an intern to have a job where you can literally see the everyday difference you make. We are all cogs that help turn the wheel.
  6. Cleaning the dishes
    • It doesn’t happen often, but sometimes, you do get stuck with the “bitch work.” Face it, when it comes down to it, we’re still interns, right? So as it turns out, on my last day, I had to deal with the grease and grime left over from a prime rib breakfast feast (that we interns, I regret to inform you, didn’t get to partake in) from two days before. You have to scrap to get into this industry, as well as clean off the scraps apparently.
  7. The Lista Story
    • My senior year in high school I dealt with a teacher who, for lack of a better word was an asshole, and as of recently, a pedophile and meth addict. Who would have guessed, right? Well to make a long story short, I had some beef with this teacher David Lista (nothing major, I made some sweatshirts, he tried to sabotage my college recommendations and referred to me as a “pig” to other students, you know, the usual), so naturally when this story broke I thought, “this is perfect for Half Ass News.” Rather quickly I found myself in the studio with Sarah and No Name and then out in the field collecting interviews from students of my old high school. After more than 340 miles of commuting and 20 hours on one busy Wednesday, I got to enjoy my own little slice of revenge.
  8. Being Interviewed
    • Just being in the studio with Sarah and No Name and talking to them has to have been one of the coolest experiences of my life, since, other than the Word of the Day, and a few special tasks here and there; an intern’s actual airtime is rather short. However, being interviewed for my opinion and story by KCBS is a whole different experience all together. I had this overwhelming feeling afterwards of being “legit.”
    • One negative thing about being on the air is hearing the sound of your own voice. I don’t know about you, but I think I sound like a douche, which rather upsets me. Why hadn’t anybody ever told me!?!?!?!
  9. My Name is
    Davis… I mean David

    • Sometimes you just get so caught up with getting your word of the day sentence just right that you forget your name. I SLIPPED UP ALL RIGHT! It happens; I was so worried about my whole post-St. Patrick’s day sentence and making sure I had enough time to say it that I flubbed up. The worst part is ever since Hooman has been giving me nothing but crap for it. He just loves to walk pass me, give me his little rapist smile and go “how you doing
      Davis?”
  10. The Word of the Day
    • Some interns despise the word of the day, some steer clear of it, and some embrace it. I tried to make every word of the day special. Yes, I’ve had my fair share of stumbles and fumbles, getting up to the mic the first few times is intimidating, but it’s always been in good fun. I can say that I have thoroughly enjoyed singing, giving the old RAZZLE-dazzle, to ROCKin out, my word of the days. You just have to make the best of it, it’s your small piece of daily fame, and remember, all of these prizes and more await you at Radio Alice.com.

Intern Vaughn’s Version of St. Patty’s…

Tuesday, March 18th, 2008

Our first blog, post St. Patty’s Day mayhem: Intern Vaughn’s version of the broadcast from yesterday.

Once I sober up, I’m sure I’ll have a few thoughts on the day myself… Enjoy! -Boot

St Patrick’s Day by Intern Vaughn

So, although I am morally opposed to the significant innuendos of nerd associated with blogging, I suppose there is no better day to start than today, St Patrick’s Day, to tell a bit about my life as an intern with Radio Alice’s morning show!  Simply put, today’s show at the Irish Blank was crazy!

Who knew the Bay Area had so many people who would be willing to show up at 6 AM to drink and watch people talk about other people drinking?  The build up for today’s event was big.
Hooman said there would be at least 500 people (not true!), Charlene continually repeated that our work as interns today would be nothing short of chaos (partially true).  Therefore, I was a bit surprised to find that I along with the other interns did pretty much nothing but stand around for the first hour and a half of the show.  Call it the calm before the storm, but I was adequately duped into thinking that our job as interns on St Patrick’s Day was easy.  All it took was a few drinks in the crowd and the on air people (none for the interns until 10 AM, the end of our work day) for things to become intense.  Within a couple of hours I worked as security, on air talent, janitor, cab watcher/payer, human microphone stand, bartender, photographer, contestant finder, and sword watcher.  Soon I found myself surprisingly exhausted somewhere between trying to convince drunk Irish men that I was not trying to pick up on their women by asking them to participate in on air games and watching Dat Phan beg No Name to not wield a broad sword while standing on his chair and providing a toast after drinking roughly three gallons of Stella Artois (try being a sober intern for this morning show, not easy!).  Still, as 10 AM rolled around and I began to mingle with the good people who showed up on a Monday to celebrate, I couldn’t help but think that the luck of the Irish had turned for this 1/5th son of Ireland (ok maybe more like 1/8th).

Keep on commenting on the blogs to keep everyone going, encouragement is key!  And while you are at it, support your local music and check out the Santa Cruz based Devil Makes Three and their song, Black Irish, in honor of
Ireland’s most famous immigrant!  Cheers.

THE BRAINDEAD COMMENTARY by Intern Serena

Intern Serena’s recap of her version of  Movie Shoot Tuesday…Enjoy!

THE BRAINDEAD COMMENTARYby INTERN SERENA

Let me first say something about the title.  Like all Sarah and No Name interns that came before me, getting to Alice at 4:30 in the morning takes some getting used to.  Often times I’ve had only a couple of hours of sleep the night before.  By the time I leave Alice at 11am, the coherence of anything I might write is very unreliable, as my brain has shut down many hours before.  With that said, this is my stab in the dark at giving Alice listeners the inside scoop about what went on today at the Sarah and No Name show.

As you already know, Matty was filming his movie today for the Alice 3 Minute Film Festival.  This caught me completely off guard.  Sarah and the crew were getting into character, and when I approached Sarah to ask a question I noticed there was something crazy going on.  I thought she may have simply used a tad bit too much wound red lipstick.  I thought either she had lost her mind or I had.  And it was probably the latter.

The next thing I knew there was a camera crew moving into the entire studio with hot pr woman and all.  I thought wow, that Matt’s a big wig!  Then it occurred to me that maybe it was Hooman’s camera crew, since he is big shite and all.  Turns out they were from my own school, San Francisco State University.

Needless to say, things were hectic all over!  Charlene came in later with a black hat and tons of black eyeliner on.  Duuuuuhhh!  That is when it finally hit my exhausted brain that they were crazy characters in this production of Matty’s.  I could not take my eyes off of Charlene’s thick black eyeliner. It was cool watching them do their in character interviews.  I almost laughed out loud, but I caught myself a few times lest I become a headless intern in this big production.  Today was also cool because I got to watch the board for the first time ever.  I was stoked!  What a geeky intern I’ve become.  It is freakin exciting to be a Sarah and No Name intern.  Especially for a geek like me!
